About Focal Energy
The energy partner accountable for the result
Focal Energy is a Gauteng-based commercial energy partner. We engineer, finance, build and operate solar and battery infrastructure for businesses — and stay responsible for its performance for the life of the asset.
Who we are
One team, from first model to year twenty-five
Most commercial solar in South Africa is sold by one company, financed by another, built by a third and maintained by whoever answers the phone. When the projected savings don't materialise, each points at the next.
Focal Energy was structured to remove that gap. The team that models your payback is the same team that finances the system, builds it, and reports on its output every month for the life of the agreement. There is no handover at which responsibility dilutes.
The result is a fleet of 40+ commercial systems across Gauteng and beyond, with 17 case studies published in full — system size, payback, IRR and monthly production — so a prospective client can check our numbers against real assets, not projections.
Leadership
A message from our Managing Director
Every proposal we issue is written to survive twenty-five years of being measured against it.
That sets an uncomfortable standard for us, and it is deliberate. The payback, IRR and year-one savings we publish are checked against metered output every month, in a report that goes to the client whether the month was a good one or not. Through PPAs and co-investment we hold a financial stake in many of the systems we build, so underperformance reaches us before it reaches you.
If you are comparing us with another provider, ask us both the same question: who reports on this system in year seven, and what happens if the numbers don’t hold? The answer will tell you more than any specification sheet.
I would rather you checked us than took our word for it. Seventeen of our projects are published in full — system size, payback, IRR and monthly production — and our Knowledge Centre sets out the methods behind them.

How we work
Design. Finance. Build. Operate.
Four responsibilities, one accountable party. Each stage exists to make the next one's numbers hold.
Design
Every engagement starts with your interval meter data. We model consumption, size the system against site constraints and grid rules, and produce a financial model — payback, IRR, year-one savings — before any capital is committed.
Finance
PPA, co-investment or funded structures, matched to your balance sheet. A PPA requires R0 upfront: we fund the asset and you buy the electricity it produces at a rate below the grid.
Build
Solar PV, battery storage and the electrical infrastructure around them — engineered, installed and commissioned to the specification the financial model was built on.
Operate
24/7 remote monitoring, preventative maintenance and monthly performance reports against a 98%+ uptime target, on agreements that run 25+ years.
Principles
How we make decisions
Not values on a wall — the standards our proposals, builds and reports are held to.
Measured, not estimated
Systems are sized from metered consumption data, and results are reported from metered production data. Our case studies publish payback, IRR and monthly output because those numbers exist and we track them — not because they make good marketing.
Skin in the game
Through PPAs and co-investment we hold a financial stake in many of the systems we build. If a system underperforms, we feel it before you do. That alignment is worth more than any warranty clause.
Accountable for 25 years
An EPC that hands over at commissioning has no reason to care about year twelve. We operate what we build for the life of the asset, so every design decision is made by the team that will live with its consequences.
Numbers a board can check
A R5M–R50M energy asset is a capital allocation decision, not a purchase. Our proposals are built to survive scrutiny from a CFO: assumptions stated, sensitivities shown, and reference projects with published data to compare against.
